Greater Washington D.C. A Great Place to Live

Metropolitan D.C. & Northern Virginia -- A great place to live

According to Northern Virginia Association of Realtors' Realtor Update Magazine, recent statistics show that the D.C. Region is the Place to Live, Learn, Thrive

The report points to the 2006 Regional Report by the Greater Washington Initiative which states that the Washington Metro area was among the best in the nation in 2005 in terms of job cration, economic growth and quality school systems. Greater Washington is now the fourth most populous metropolitan region in the nation, trailing only New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago!

The article details that unlike those areas, the Washington D.C. metro population is expected to increase 8.5 percent by 2010

Greater Washington generated 270,800 jobs during the past five years, more than any other major meto area, with an unemployment rate of 3.4% in 2005, far below the national average of 5.1%. Thirteen of the area's high schools are in Newsweek's Top 100 ranking. Greater Washington has a higher percentage of PhDs than any other metro area.

Ours is also a region of great diversity. Fairfax County has a higher density of foreign-born residents than Chicago, New York, or San Francisco. Minorities will comprise 46 percent of the population in Greater Washington by 2010. Twenty percent of area residents speak a language at home besides English.

Greater Washington's 2005 median household income was $72,799 -- the wealthies of any large metro area.

All those statistics confirm what many of us already knew -- Northern Virginia is a great place to live. That's why owning a home here is a great investment!

Acupuncture: A Benefit to the Well Individual?

Before we begin a discussion about the benefits of acupuncture, let?s talk about the origins of acupuncture.

It was first used in China over 2000 years ago, and is one of the oldest medical procedures in the world.

It is a family of procedures that stimulates the anatomy of the body and helps to balance the energy flow throughout the body.

It is this kind of acupuncture that is practiced in the United Sates today, through the use of tiny, metallic needles placed in affected areas and manipulated by hand or by electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture is the basic foundation for Traditional Chinese Medicine and is based on the belief that there are two opposing and inseparable forces within our body.

They are known as the Yin and Yang of the entire person. The Yin is representative of the cold, slow, or passive principle, and yang represents the hot, excited or active principle.

A healthy state is achieved by maintaining a balance state of the yin and yang. This is done through vital pathways or meridians that allow for the flow of qi, or vital energy. The vital energy flow occurs along pathways known as meridians.

These meridians connect over 2,000 acupuncture points along the body. There are 12 main meridians, and 8 secondary meridians. Although traditional western medicine does not completely understand how acupuncture works, the proof that it does work has been shown in several studies conducted by western medical facilities.

Now, let?s move to the question of does it work?

According to the National Institute of Health, the answer would be yes. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in many areas of health care.

Areas such as postoperative nausea, chemotherapy side effects, osteoarthritis, low-back pain, headache, menstrual cramps, addiction, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma, just to name a few.

The study revealed that acupuncture was able to provide pain relief, improve function and mobility of joints due to arthritis inflammation, and served to complement standard care.

Although there are many who would doubt the effectiveness of acupuncture, once they are a patient, they are believers. It has been proposed that acupuncture works and produces its effects through regulating the nervous system.

The theory proposes that since acupuncture produces its effect through regulation of the nervous system, it induces the release of endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites on the body. There is also the theory that acupuncture alters the brain chemistry by the changing the neurotransmitters in the brain.

Without doubt acupuncture was a benefit in the study, and as a patient myself, I can vouch for the wonderful effect it has had on my back. Although acupuncture is classified as an alternative medicine therapy, and there is still much to be understood about the way it works, it is a proven aid in maintaining optimal health.

But what about the well individual, can acupuncture provide a benefit to them? Absolutely. Because acupuncture works off the belief that we must maintain balance of our vital energy flow in order to remain healthy, acupuncture serves as the tool for realignment.

Our vital energy flow can be out of balance, and we still feel and appear quite healthy. It is in this capacity that acupuncture serves as a sort of preventive medicine.

Checking and balancing the flow of energy on the meridian points in your body is like your car receiving a tune-up before it is in need of a repair.

Philippines Real Estate

The real estate business in the Philippines has recently been gaining popularity with several real estate companies developing their own sites in several parts of the country, including the non-metropolitan areas. Prices of real estate properties are relatively low when compared to those located in the United States. This makes investments in the Philippines attractive because their values are expected to appreciate in years to come.

People who want to make an investment in the country or make profits by selling a real estate property can manually contact real estate brokers for the packages they offer. However, the easiest and most practical way to locate brokers or agents is by searching for them in the Internet. There are already several online real estate marketers available in the Philippines.

Online real estate Philippine marketers promote their sites that include real estate listings and brokerages to international search engines. This makes their coverage wider and as such, heightens the possibility of getting closed deals quickly.

If a person plans to sell real estate property located in the Philippines, online real estate marketers can act as their brokers. They will be the ones to look for potential buyers and explain to them the initial policies and terms of the offer. The investor can also use their site to promote additional real estate items they want to sell.

For people who want to buy real estate property in the Philippines, online marketers also provide real estate listings that come from brokers in several parts of the country. Because it may be very difficulty to scan through the available properties for sale, some marketers have developed a system to filter out the choices. A leading marketer has set up a buyer's wizard that helps buyers narrow down the choices by their budget, preferred location and size. Once a selection has been made, the buyers submit the online form. The broker of the selected property will be contacted by the online marketer for a detailed discussion of the real estate package.

With the online marketing trend in place, real estate in the Philippines can be expected to register more profits in the coming years.

The New Trend in Breast Pump Design: Massage

Once as a mother of a breastfeeding infant, I found myself in a circumstance where I was in need of a serious breast pump. I rented a hospital grade breast pump of a major brand. The first time I used it, I did not know whether I should be sick or faint. I wish someone had warned me that I would see my nipples assume a pointy shape that I had never dreamed they were capable of. I immediately wondered why they could not design a breast pump to work like a baby's mouth. From what I observed, the baby compresses the areola and nipple with mouth and jaw action. Although I cannot see what is going on inside the baby's mouth I am skeptical that a breast pump replicates that action. Breast pump design harkens back to machines that were intended for milking cows. Most breast pumps tug or pull on the nipple in a suck and release rhythm. What you see is the nipple going point, relax, point, relax like some enthusiastic member of an aerobic exercise class.

Now enter the newest innovation in breast pump design: the massaging breast pump. Some breast pumps claim or seem to have more of the massage element than others. The Playtex Embrace Breast Pump, the manual Dr. Brown's Natural Comfort Breast Pump and the Whittlestone Breast Expressers are all pumps that express milk without stretching the nipple in the tug-and-pull style. The Avent Isis breast pumps, manual and electrics, have funnels with Let-down Massage Cushions, which have massaging petals or bumps on it. These massaging petals move in and out with the suction rhythm of the pump. Medela and Ameda are the longest established and most reputable makers of breast pumps. Their most recent innovations have been in areas of design not related to massage: the 2-Phase Expression in the Medela Symphony, Medela Pump In Style Advanced, Medela Harmony and Medela Swing breast pumps and the Hygienikit feature in the Ameda Purely Yours and Ameda Elite breast pumps. These companies have each made one small contribution to the massage trend: the Medela SoftFit breast shield and the Ameda Flexishield flange. These parts work with any of their breast pumps and massage by flexing in a more static way, accompanied by the traditional tug-and pull suction.

Are these massaging breast pumps more comfortable, more effective at expressing breast milk, or at least, do they feel more like a baby nursing than other pumps?
I have read hundreds of breast pump reviews and I find the two major complaints against breast pumps are issues of comfort and effectiveness at removing breast milk. Addressing just the comfort issue, there can be many causes of discomfort and it is important that women investigate and eliminate those causes in their breast pumping where possible, to prevent injury and to expedite milk let-down. However, I am inclined to believe this unnatural tug-and-pull motion can be the cause of emotional and physical distress to women until they get used to it or overcome it with persistence.

Now who can object to massage as a concept? Of all these massaging breast pumps on the market only one has received enough independent consumer reviews to satisfy me that consumers have reached a positive, though not unanimous, consensus about it. The other breast pumps are just too new or have not been marketed extensively enough to know whether women will find them more comfortable or more effective than traditional vacuum-only pumps. I applaud efforts to redesign and improve the breast pump, but I can only now hope for a time that most breast pumps will deliver on their promise of feeling just like baby.

See the full article on the massaging breast pump trend for more information and updates.

Why You Should Wear a Nursing Bra When Breastfeeding

There is no reason to wear a nursing bra, or any other type of bra for that matter. So, if you're happy not wearing one then go right ahead. But most women feel more comfortable wearing a bra and when breastfeeding, wearing the correct nursing is a definite must.

But why wear a nursing bra when breastfeeding? Won't a normal bra do instead? Well, the answer to that is, if you feel okay wearing a normal bra whilst breastfeeding, then it's probably okay too. However, a regular bra is not designed for breastfeeding whereas nursing bras are, and it makes sense to have a few nursing bras, whilst you're breastfeeding your baby.

Whatever nursing bra you buy, it is important that the bra fits correctly and is easy to use. A bra that doesn't fit correctly can block your milk ducts and cause milk production to decrease. Also, plugged milk ducts can become infected, leading to mastitis, so be sure that the nursing bra is right for you; all woman are different and therefore, what might be a good nursing bra for some, may not be the right nursing bra for others.

If possible, it is best to avoid under wire nursing bras, especially in the early postpartum weeks. However some women, especially those with plus size cups, prefer under wire nursing bras as they feel they get more support and avoid backache. If you do choose under wire, then it is vital that it fits correctly. The Medela Extended Size Classic bra comes in an under wire design and is a very good bra for the fuller figured woman. Playtex also make a good under wire nursing bra; the Fancy Me Underwire Lace Bra. Today, there are many excellent plus size nursing bras that give the required support without under wire. The Bravado Supreme Nursing bra is especially designed for the fuller-breasted woman; the bra also has a delicately embossed fabric, which is strong yet silky to the touch - clothing glides over it making breastfeeding very easy.

A good nursing bra makes breastfeeding easy. A nursing bra is designed to open at each cup. A good nursing bra should open at the cup but still provide plenty of support for the breast, making breastfeeding easier. Make sure you buy a nursing bra that you can open with one hand; you should also be able to close it one-handed as well. Most brands come with plastic clips - such as Medela and Elle Macpherson, or eye and hook - such the Goddess and Bravado maternity bras. Being able to open a nursing bra easily is important for discreet breastfeeding in public, so be sure to buy one that allows easy access and easy closing.

Another reason why you should use a nursing bra is because you'll almost certainly want to insert breast pads from time to time, especially when out and about and don't want to be seen with leaking breasts. All good makes of nursing bras come with cups especially designed to allow discrete insertion of breast pads.

When breastfeeding, the shape of a woman's breasts change over time; in fact the shape of the breasts change throughout the day. Nursing bras are very adjustable. Most good makes of nursing bras, such as Medela, Bravado, Playtex etc. are designed to allow adjustment at the strap and also at the cup.

As well as providing support and making breastfeeding easier, a nursing bra can also give a woman great confidence. As stated already, breastfeeding in public places is easier if the bra is easy to use. Today's nursing bras are also very stylish and make many women feel confident about the way the look and feel. If you can afford it, it is worth investing in one stylish nursing bra, such as the Elle Macpherson Maternelle Nursing Bra; just for those special occasions.

Finally, there is no such thing as the best nursing bra. Buy the bra that gives you the best support, is easy for you to use and gives you the greatest confidence.

On Men Buying Tampons and the Importance of Properly Targeting Your Audience

Today's Internet Marketing article has to do with a subject near and dear to my heart ever since I married my lovely wife Yvonne.

Buying Tampons for a woman... while still feeling like a man.

Picture this:

You are a guy (a man's man) and your wife, girlfriend, mistress, booty call, fling (whatever...) is sick at home when she calls you at your cellphone to ask you if you can be a sweetheart and run to the store to pick up some tampons for her.

Panic sets in...

You have no idea where to start, what to ask for at the store or what type of packaging tampons are sold in... but, you committ to run the errand in order not to piss her off and potentially ruin the relationship (imagine, she is sick AND she has her period... Double whammy.)

I don't know about you, but there is something to be said about going to a supermarket or drug store and purchasing a box of tampons that makes me as a man feel a little antsy. Starting from the fact that 99% of the time I have to ask someone (typically a woman... hopefully) where they are located in the store.

Once I get there, it is hard to distinguish among all the girlie looking boxes which is the one I am supposed to buy (I may be an expert in Internet marketing but I am clueless on the topic of which feminine hygine product to choose. All the boxes look the same and the colors are pretty similar.) - All this while trying to pull off a covert operation so no one sees me buying something that is not for me (but technically I am the only one who knows that...)

OK... On with the reason for my article and how this all ties into Marketing and Internet Salesmanship.

I think it's pretty obvious that tampons, sanitary napkins or pads are products that are targeted towards women being the purchasers and the end consumers of the product, and the top brands in the market such as Playtex, Always, Tampax and Kotex have a firm stronghold on that consumer segment.

This got me thinking about an opportunity for a new brand of tampons trying to break into an already saturated market such as tampons and what it would take...

For instance, rather than trying to cannibalize on the main target audience traditionally pursued by the main players, this new brand could create a tampon marketing campaign geared towards men who are buying tampons for their wives, girlfriends, daughters, etc. which would position itself as taking away the embarassment and confusion of the men who are running the, until now, shameful errand of going for some tampons.

I know this example may seem a bit silly to some readers at first, but I am taking the ruthless extreme in order to make a point (and there is a point...)

Let's see how this would play out:

After much discussion with an expert on the subject (my wife Yvonne), we came up with a hypothetical tampon brand called They're not for me... These tampons would be packaged in a discrete, masculine-looking box which would be color coded based on the absorbency of the tampon. For example, lue for light days, green for regular days, ed for heavy days and silver for extreme flow (personally, I would rather not imagine the days that would require these.)

Women asking men to purchase tampons while at the store would simply have to tell them which colored box (absorbency level) of They're not for me... they need.

Furthermore, the boxes could also be placed in an area highly trafficked by men and which would present the least embarassment to the male consumer buying it (e.g. condom aisle, next to the shaving needs, even behind the sales counter right next to the cigarrettes - imagine, walking up to the counter sales person and asking for a carton of Marlboro reds, a pack of gum and a blue box of They're not for me...)

In fact, a creative marketer could do cross promotions with companies that traditionally market to men to include incentives to buy the product. For instance, $2 off a six pack of beer with your purchase of They're not for me..., a sweepstakes to win tickets to a ball game, etc.

This They're not for me... brand also has the potential to incite a good amount of press coverage as it takes an unusual approach on what has been a common/embarassing issue faced by all.

Just the amount of press coverage on this would be enough to help the product launch and establish itself firmly in the market.

(BTW, to disclaim and legally cover my a*s - this is just an idea I am using as an example that I am sharing with you and I am not endorsing nor encouraging that you do anything with it. In other words, I won't be held responsible for your level of success or lack thereof if you decide to actually execute on it.)

Ok, enough about tampons for the moment, I think you get my point.

When launching a product in a highly competitive market such as selling on the Internet where there are already established competitors and the barrier to entry for new products is not that high, you need to find a way to position your product with a different twist that will allow you to specifically target what audience segment you are pursuing and address what specific benefits are in this product for them.

For example, in the They're not for me... tampon example:

- The product takes a different slant to that followed by the market leaders to address an underserved segment of the buying population by addressing an unmet need.

- This not only makes the product be more suitable to the buyers of the product but also adds a different twist that makes it stand out from the hundreds of other already available options.

- While we are on this, specifically targeting such a narrow niche also creates the possibility of selling the product at a higher price premium as this is a more targeted product which offers extra benefits/comfort level to the immediate buyer.

(For example, there is a new line of condoms by Trojan condoms being marketed specifically for women which sells on a per package price for considerably higher than the traditional male targeted line.)

KEY TAKEAWAY:

When crafting the marketing/positioning for your new product offering, think of the specific segment of the market you are pursuing and create a product that alks the talk, looks the part and addresses the wants and needs of that audience. By taking a tight/specific approach, you might be able to target a segment of the audience that may not be being fully served by other players (e.g. PC / Microsoft type computers dominate most of the general desktop market but Apple has carved a very profitable niche in the graphic designer and music production segments with their Macintosh; and have gone on to extend this music / multi-media perceived market expertise into a practically complete market domination with their i-Pod brand of MP3 players.)

Take a moment to look at your current online sales strategy and any upcoming products you may be creating. See if there is a different angle that will allow you to take advantage of your business core strengths to make the final product marketing different from every other product out there.

Think outside of the box and explore all angles no matter how absurd they may seem to you at first - there may be a gem hidden in there somewhere. After all, there must be quite a profitable niche when Clinique launched its beauty line exclusively targeting men and why Just For Men hair coloring products is one of the leading brands among the countless hair coloring options available.

Now, if you'll please excuse me, I need to run out to the store to buy some tampons for my wife.

If I could only remember if she needs egulars or supers...

Bravado Medela Playtext and EmmaJane Today's Nursing Bras are Functional Comfortable and Sexy

Gone are the days when pregnant and nursing mothers were confined to bed. Now nursing mothers are returning to work, going out and meeting friends and other mothers and they want a nursing bra that they feel comfortable wearing and one that looks chic.

Today there are all sorts of nursing bras to meet all requirements. There are 5 types of nursing bras; bras that unhook at the front, between the cups, bras that unzip at the base of the cup, bras that have a fastener or button on the front strap to allow access, bras that are stretchy and allow very easy access, and night-time nursing bras. Maternity bras come in all sizes as well, everything from petite to plus size nursing bras. The following brands of nursing bras offer some or all of these features.

Bravado nursing bras are extremely popular. Bravado maternity bras come in one of 3 ranges: the Bravado Original Nursing Bra, the Bravado Supreme Nursing Bra, and the Bravado Lifestyle Nursing Bra. The Original Nursing bra comes in 3 styles: Basic, Plus Style and Double Plus Style. Choosing which one suits you depends on whether you're expecting, have just given birth or have been breastfeeding for a while. If you're a new mother, then the Bravado Original Nursing Bra is the one for you. All bras are made from a super-soft cotton/spandex blend fabric, for maximum support and changing body shape. The Bravado Supreme Nursing Bra is for the fuller-breasted woman. Unlike other fuller-breasted bras the Supreme isn't under-wired but still holds its shape all day long. The bra also has a delicately embossed fabric, which is strong yet silky to the touch - clothing glides over it making breastfeeding very easy. The Bravado Lifestyle Nursing Bra is a very chic - dare I say sexy - bra with a low neckline, molded cups that give an incredibly smooth, seamless shape that is very flattering under tops and dresses. The neckline and strap have a very feminine lace edge and the nursing flaps open for full access for breastfeeding.

Medela nursing bras come in many types - too many to give an in-depth review. However, here are the ranges with some comments. The Medela Comfort Bra is probably going to suit most nursing mothers. It is for both day and night time wear, and Medela says it is the only soft bra available with convenient one-hand drop cup release for easy nursing - although other manufacturers might disagree. The Medela Comfort Bra is an excellent maternity bra, though not the prettiest you can buy. The Medela Seamlees Bra Line is a superb nursing bra and it's hard to find a better nursing bra. The Seamless range all come with low neckline with a delicate lacy pattern woven right into the fabric. Medela also claim that the two-piece cup has a unique one-hand outer cup release that allows easy opening for breastfeeding - again other would disagree. The bra affords a smooth, natural line under whatever top you wear. The Seamless line comes in several types, so there's bound to be one to suit every nursing mother. The different types available are; Softcup, Full Fit and Underwire. Medela have just recently release the Sleep Bra. It is made from very soft, stretchy fabric that allows easy drawback of the cup for breastfeeding - no fiddling with buttons, clasps or zips in the middle of the night. The Medela Classic Bra is very feminine and stylish. Again, the neckline is low and the lace 'softcup' is constructed of soft and cool cotton-Lycra. The cup size also adjusts to 3 positions to allow for the changing shape of the breast throughout the day. You can also buy the Medela Extended Size Classic Bra for the fuller-breasted woman - incidentally, the bra is designed to work with the Medela Pumping Free Attachment Kit.

The Playtex Expectant Moments Nursing Bra is a very stylish maternity bra. The neckline is very low and the cups are soft inside with a pointelle fabric outside. The fabric used is polyester, cotton, nylon and spandex. The combination of fabric provides support, comfort, coolness and easy adjustment. The bra fastens by means of a double hook at the back and there are pull-down front flaps, which have a plastic clasp at the top of the cup. The Playtex Expectant Moments bra is a very stylish but very affordable nursing bra.

Goddess nursing bras are made by the same company that also manufactures Rigby & Peller, Fantasie of England, and Freya, so you can be assured of their quality. Goddess make 2 types of nursing bras, the 1001 and 511. The 1001 Goddess nursing bra is unusual as it features bold printed shapes in red, black and white, printed above the nursing cups - the idea being to visually stimulate babies while nursing. The bra is made from 100% pure cotton. The neckline is quite low and the bra has broad straps to provide maximum comfort. The 511 is the more feminine design. The 511 Goddess nursing bra is made from a cotton/polyester fabric, embossed with a lace design. It has dual shoulder strap clasps for easy breastfeeding.

As you might expect the Elle Macpherson Nursing Bra is feminine, sexy and pricey. The Elle Macpherson La Mere nursing bra is very lacey, on both straps and the stretchy lace cups. The cups are lined with 100% cotton for comfort. The Elle Macpherson Maternelle Nursing Bra is also a very beautiful nursing bra. The bra is seamless, comes with wide straps and easy clips that allow the cup to be opened with one hand. Elle Macpherson nursing bras are very feminine and sexy but they do come at a price; not a bra you might wear every day but certainly the one to wear for that special occasion.

Gone are the days when nursing mothers hid indoors. Now any mother who is breastfeeding can find a nursing bra that fits her requirements; from comfortable and plain nursing bras to expensive and stylish nursing bras. Breastfeeding mothers can now go out into the world with their heads high and their chests out.
